The Clos Maria estate encompasses 230 hecatres and includes the Perinet family homestead and cellars as well as 10 hectares of vines with over 50,000 vineyard plants. White grape varietals grown include: Garnatxa blanca, Viognier, Muscat d'Alexandria, Muscat à petit grain and Chenin. Red grape varietals grown include: Garnatxa, Syrah, Cariñena (planted in the highest part of the vineyards), Cabernet and Marselan. There are also experimental varieties such as Tannat, Touriga Nacional, Petit Verdot and Carmenère, adding complexity to our wines and offerings.
Each vineyard block is planted to maximize the exposure and the unique characteristics of the Licorella (slate) terroir. Though commonly associated with the neighboring D.O.Q. Priorat, Clos Maria's vineyards are planted in rich Licorella soils which give a wonderful mineral-rich texture and complexity to the wines.
Presa Mas: primarily planted with Syrah and Cariñena. There are also experimental varieties such as Tannat (a typical variety of Uruguay), National Touriga (a typical variety of Portugal) and Petit Verdot (a typical variety of France). In the flattest area of Presa Mas there is a small plot of white Garnatxa with a fresher maturation.
Camí a Mas: this part of the estate is planted with Viognier, Muscat d'Alexandria and Muscat with Petit Grain. Most of this vineyard is Viognier with southern exposure, obtaining a very high Viognier maturation with a Côte du Rhône character.
Coster (Tros de l'Anglès): this vineyard is planted with the terraced structure of a hillside, typical of Priorat, with 100% Garnatxa Blanca with a western exposure. This white Garnatxa is very ripe and is complemented by the Garnatxa Blanca de Presa Mas that is much fresher. The white garnatxa of this quality is very interesting, since it reflects the minerality of the licorella soil typical of the 'terroir' of the Priorat.
Tros de l'hereu: planted 100% with Chenin, an exceptional site for its view of the mountains. Faces the Mas Vell vineyard, one of the most qualitative blocks of the neighbouring Perinet Winery estate.
Gibertes: At the northern end of the Clos Maria estate, reached traveling 1 km up the Maria Valley. The vine varieties are of Cabernet, Marselan (which is a cross between Garnatxa and Cabernet) and experimentally, the Carmenère (originally from Bordeaux and exported to Chile and Argentina). This vineyard is very fresh, giving the grapes spicy notes and lots of fresh fruit, lengthening the blends of the wines.
Our vineyards provide a unique sense of place for each varietal; allowing the Clos Maria winemaking team to achieve distinctive wines of history while also giving them a modern freshness.
