Our Region

The D.O. Montsant was established in 2001 and is an appellation comprising approximately 2,000 hectares of vineyards with an annual production of 5 million bottles, producing exceptional terroir driven wines. The nucleus of this difference is centred on the local grape varieties: Granatxa and Carignan, grown in mineral rich Montsant soils, influenced by its micro climate and blended with recently introduced grape varieties (Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah, Merlot, amongst others) all helping to make premium quality wines. In the regional pursuit of excellence, the role played by winemakers and wineries is of utmost importance. The Montsant wine appellation stands out for its production, divided between large wine co-operatives and small family-run wineries alike. It is also known for its dedicated young, locally trained winemakers as well as European winemakers who have arrived more recently. Despite all these dualities: large-small and native-foreign, the final result is unanimous praise for the high quality of Montsant wines.

History

Montsant's history is deeply interconnected between the enviornment and spirituality. The majestic Montsant mountain range has long been a place of refuge for those who prioritize the importance of cultivating the spiritual and religious dimensions of their individual lives. Such are the hermits and monks who, in honour of the mountain range’s name, have inhabited the heights since the twelfth century.

The Romans made wines in these lands, the Carthusian monks promoted grape growing throughout the county and in the nineteenth century, the wines of Montsant attained accolades in universal exhibitions around the world. The D.O. Montsant is a land where, for centuries, its natural environment and it’s wines have been intricately linked and where the old vines, cared for as if they were real treasures, are the veritable pillars of the region’s history. The protagonists of this history in the making are now enthusiastically looking forward to a new future.

Environment & Sustainability

Within our wine appellation, we understand the landscape to be part of the region’s identity and its cultural values. Our region's rich heritage is the foundation of our largely agricultural-based community. Our community has found a way to live in harmony with the environment, basing its influence on the preservation of the area’s natural values. We would like, and in fact need, to continue this way. In a world which recognizes the extreme value of unspoiled areas, we must not forget that our natural environment is also an economic resource which should not be destroyed by reckless human activity. The landscape adds value to quality produce and remains synonymous with work well done as well as an example of respect and environmental sustainability. The D.O. Montsant has taken clear steps, along with other institutions, to promote a charter for the preservation of our natural heritage. Our commitment extends to cover the county’s bid for having the region’s landscape declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
